not to criticize too much, but I read this post in full expecting a full honest review. There is nothing but positive things written about the deodorant and then you give it a rating of 7/10. What were the negative things that made it not a 10?
Though I was initially drawn to natural deodorant out of a desire to avoid aluminum, I've come to appreciate them for a host of other reasons. The skin under my arms is really sensitive, especially after shaving, and I find that natural deodorant is far less irritating than most conventional formulas and, in the case of options that contain coconut oil, even a bit hydrating.
Of course, the antiperspirant power of natural deodorant is not going to be the same as what you're used to if you're new to the stuff. Some of the fragrances don't last as long, and you might find yourself smelling like, well, a human instead of a rosebush or whatever after several hours. Overall, these picks keep sweat and B.O. at bay for almost as long as traditional formulas, so I really can't complain.
Native is all about making safe and effective personal care products, like this aluminum-, paraben-, and sulfate-free deodorant. The deodorant has a simple formula, with just 14 natural ingredients. Baking soda helps neutralize odor, tapioca starch keeps your pits dry, and shea butter helps keep your underarms feeling soft and moisturized. Since baking soda (one of the main ingredients in the regular formula) can be irritating for some, Native also offers a baking soda-free option for sensitive skin.
Insider Reviews senior editor, Sally Kaplan, is a big fan of the product. "Native makes the best aluminum-free deodorant I've tried, and I've tested probably 10 other brands. The formula keeps me dry but doesn't clog my pores, and it comes in a ton of great scents. It's the closest thing I've found to regular antiperspirant."
Even if you do sweat a bit (which can be common with natural deodorants), Native's array of unique scents will keep your underarms smelling fresh and clean. Eucalyptus and Mint and Coconut and Vanilla are some of the classic combinations, but Native always has a rotating array of seasonal offerings that are pretty delightful. You can also customize your own scent.
A single stick of Native Deodorant costs $12, but there are many ways to buy. If you subscribe to Native and opt-in for regular deodorant shipments, each full-sized container will be just $10. Additionally, you can save by purchasing a three-pack, which includes a sampling of scents, for $30.
Schmidt's is another great option for natural deodorant. It's vegan and cruelty-free; formulated without aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrance; applies like a dream, and lasts all day long.
Like Schmidt's, Lavanila Sport Luxe has a very similar texture to more traditional deodorant, and while it might wear off a little bit faster, it still keeps body odor and perspiration at bay for several hours. The mini version is small enough to toss in your gym bag in case you need to re-apply, but I haven't found it necessary unless I'm having a really long and busy day.
Maybe it's gross to admit that I used someone else's deodorant, even if that someone gave birth to me, but it's the truth. And I don't regret it one bit because this stuff is indeed long-lasting, natural, and refreshing. The Lemongrass scent is my favorite, but it comes in other flavors if citrus isn't your thing.
If you love coconut and hate the white marks that some opaque deodorants can leave on your clothing, I suggest you check out Kopari Coconut Deodorant. It's a clear formula the glides on smooth (seriously, it feels like a moisturizer) and doesn't gunk up your underarms throughout the day.
Otherwise, I love how hydrating this feels on my normally dry and irritated underarms. Due to the texture, I think it would be a great pick for winter, though it held up well on me in 80+ degree weather. The formula has several hero ingredients, including coconut oil, a popular choice for natural deodorants; sage oil, which acts something like a natural antiperspirant; and vitamin-packed coconut water.
I'm usually more of a stick deodorant kind of lady, but the second I applied Weleda 24h Roll-On Deodorant in "Citrus," I knew I was a fan. First of all, it smells like the inside of a lime, which might as well be my signature scent. It goes on cool and wet, like most liquid roll-on deodorants, and it didn't sting my sensitive underarms. I call that a win!
The Crystal Mineral Deodorant Stick has only one ingredient: mineral salts. It basically looks like a smooth, rounded hunk of salt in a plastic container. The hypoallergenic deodorant doesn't have any Aluminum Chloride/Chlorohydrate/Zirconium, parabens, phthalates, or artificial fragrance in it, so it won't irritate sensitive skin. It's also vegan and cruelty-free.
To apply the deodorant correctly, you have to put it on right after your shower. The mineral salts work best on freshly washed skin that is still wet. If your skin isn't wet, you need to dip it in water several times as you apply it. It's best to apply a few coats and let your pits dry before you put on any clothing, but either way, the deodorant won't leave any white marks on your clothes.
The mineral salts eliminate and block odor so you can stay fresh smelling for up to 24 hours. Since it's essentially a stick of salt and you only use a bit of each time you apply it, the deodorant lasts a long time. Mine typically lasts about a year before I have to replace it, which is both good for my wallet and the environment. The plastic container it's in is also recyclable.
If you prefer to get rid of the plastic packaging, Crystal has a solid piece of mineral salt that doesn't come in a plastic house. The company also sells traditional deodorant sticks, roll-ons, and sprays if you feel like the mineral stick is just too weird for you. All of the company's deodorants are natural, cruelty-free, and safe for sensitive skin.
All that said, if you're curious about natural deodorant, go for it! (I certainly did!) But know that because the formula is aluminum-free, Schmidt's deodorant is not going to stop you from sweating. If you're ingredient-conscious (and odor-conscious), it's a great choice. But if you're at all concerned about wetness, I would look elsewhere.
There can be a bit of a transition period when switching from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant. Some sources refer to this period as an "armpit detox," which sounds more intense that I found it to be. Essentially, in the absence of an antiperspirant, your armpits are getting used to sweating again, and in doing so, they may get a little extra stinky.
Schmidt's Deodorant Company, LLC (dba Schmidt's Naturals)[1] is an American personal care company based in Portland, Oregon. A subsidiary of Unilever, Schmidt's Naturals manufactures and sells plant and mineral-based personal care products including natural deodorant, soap, and toothpaste.[2][3][4][5]
In 2016, Schmidt's launched an exclusive partnership with its first big retailer Target.com and was named Manufacturer of the Year in the small company category by the Portland Business Journal.[14][20] By late 2016, Schmidt's had grown to almost 50 employees and offered 10 stick deodorants and 6 jar formulations.[12] As the naturals segment continued to grow, Schmidt's Deodorant Company attracted the attention of large retailers.[21]
Here+Now is literally right here, right now. Justin Bieber is dropping a Schmidt's deodorant called "Here+Now" via a limited launch on Sept. 5 before an official release on Oct. 1. The deodorant is a gender-inclusive scent that was specifically created by the pop icon. Bieber previously teased the collaboration with the brand, whose tagline is "Natural deodorant that really works," on his personal Instagram back in May.
According to the latest press materials, Schmidt's is offering a sneak sniff, er, peek of the product in early September before the product launches next month. It will be available for just 48 hours via a Deo Drop on the Schmidt's website, and costs $10.99 for a 3.25-oz stick. There is a limit of five deodorants per customer. The early access ends at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 7.
Schmidt's CEO Ryu Yokoi confirmed that Bieber was fully immersed in the collaboration, saying, "Justin has been integral in the development of Here+Now by bringing his own personal journey with self-care to the table." The singer personally selected the essential oils that were used to create the deodorant's fragrance. He also had a hand in designing the packaging.
Here+Now is only accessible via the link above. It's described as a "mellow" scent, mixing fresh and spicy citrus with warm florals and deep, woodsy base notes to neutralize those pesky odors and keep you smelling fresh all day long. It was specifically designed for anyone and everyone to use. Here+Now is also the mineral-enriched and sensitive-skin version of Schmidt's best-selling activated charcoal deodorant. Like the rest of the brand's offerings, Here+Now is plant-based, and is certified vegan and cruelty-free. There is also no aluminum or artificial fragrances in the product.
Since Schmidt's markets itself as a brand that prioritizes both physical and mental wellness, it actually named this deodorant Here+Now to remind users to be present in and to enjoy the moment. Basically, the Bieber x Schmidt's collab gives new meaning to the notion of "don't sweat the small stuff."
